INTRODUCTION

Rashtriya Military Schools are English medium residential Public Schools run by the Ministry of Defence to impart quality education to the wards of defence personnel and civilians from Classes VI to XII. These Schools are the founding members of the Indian Public Schools' Conference (IPSC). Established in the year 1925, these Schools are among the oldest Public Schools in India. There are five Rashtriya Military Schools (RMS) located at Chail in the Shimla Hills of Himachal Pradesh, Ajmer and Dholpur in Rajasthan, Belgaum and Bengaluru in Karnataka. Cadets are admitted into Class VI & IX through a Common Entrance Test (CET) conducted under the aegis of the Integrated Headquarters, Ministry of Defence (Army).

Rashtriya Military schools were eastablished as King George's Royal Indian Military schools to take care of the education of the sons of defence personnel. In 1952, the schools were reorganized on Public School lines and admissions were made open to the sons of Defence Service Officers and civilians. In 1954, the school became member of the Indian Public Schools Conference (IPSC) and continues to be an active member till date. The schools were renamed Military Schools in 1966 and its old motto, 'Play the Game' was replaced with 'Sheelem Param Bhushanam' which means Character is the Highest Virtue. On 25th Jun 2007, the schools got their present name "Rashtriya Military School". The school has several of its alumni occupying high positions in the Armed Forces and in other sectors doing stellar service to the motherland.

Admission to Rashtriya Military Schools (RMS) for the 2026 academic year is a competitive process that begins in 2025. Applications are invited for admission to classes VI and IX. The entire process, from application to final selection, is conducted under the aegis of the Integrated Headquarters, Ministry of Defence (Army).

ACADEMICS

Rashtriya Military Schools are affiliated to the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE). The medium of instruction in the Schools is English. The academic year is from April to March and is divided into two terms. All Schools offer Science stream.Rashtriya Military Schools prepare Cadets for the following examinations:-

a.     Central Board of Secondary Education.

                            i.            All India Secondary School Examination (Class X).

                            ii.            All India Senior School Certificate Examination (Class XII)

b. Union Public Service Commission Examination for admission to National Defence Academy.

👉 Online registration for Admission in Class VI and Class IX in Rashtriya Military Schools (RMSs) 

The admission process is scheduled across several months. While the exact dates may vary, they generally follow this pattern:

• Application Period: The online application form is typically available from 10 September 2025 to 09 October 2025

• Written Examination: The Common Entrance Test (CET) is an OMR-based test that is going to be held on 7 December 2025.

• Results & Interviews: Written exam results are expected in January 2026, followed by interviews for shortlisted candidates in February 2026.

Final Merit List: The final merit list, based on the combined performance in the written exam and interview, is anticipated in April 2026. 

Form Fee: General and Defence- Rs.600/-, SC/ST- RS.300/-

🛡️ Eligibility Criteria For RMS (Rashtriya Military School) 2026 Exam

To be eligible for admission, a candidate must meet specific age and educational requirements.

For Class VI 👶

• Age: Candidates must be between 10 and 12 years old as of March 31, 2026. This means their date of birth should fall between April 1, 2014, and March 31, 2016 (both dates inclusive).

• Education: Candidates must have passed or be studying in Class V and must pass it before the date of admission.

For Class IX 🧑

• Age: Candidates must be between 13 and 15 years old as of March 31, 2026. This means their date of birth should fall between April 1, 2011, and March 31, 2013 (both dates inclusive).

• Education: Candidates must have passed or be studying in Class VIII from a government-recognized school and must pass it before the date of admission.

A six-month relaxation in the upper age limit is given to the children of personnel killed in action. Admission is open to both boys and girls.

📝 Admission & Selection Process

The selection process is rigorous and comprises three main stages:

1. Written Examination: The Common Entrance Test (CET) is the first stage. It is an OMR-based exam.

2. Interview: Candidates who qualify for the written exam are invited for an interview at one of the Rashtriya Military Schools.

3. Medical Fitness: All candidates must pass a medical fitness examination according to the standards specified in AFMSF-2.

• The final selection is based on a merit list determined by the candidate's performance in the written test and the interview.

c. Scanned copy of Photograph (JPEG/ JPG): Each Applicant shall affix his/her recent colour passport size photograph (of size 3.5 cms x 4.5 cms) in JPG format of size not more than 50 KB to upload the same at appropriate space provided in the on-line Application Form. 

d. Scanned copy of Signature (JPEG/ JPG): Each Applicant shall affix his/her signature (of size 3.5 cms x 1.5 cms) on a White Paper with Black Pen. Scan the above signature in a JPG format of size not more than 50 KB and upload the same at appropriate space provided in the on-line Application Form.

e. Scanned copy of Caste Category Certificate, if applicable: Max. Size 250 KB. (PDF format) f. Scanned copy of Parent Killed in Action (KIA) Certificate, if applicable: Max. Size 250 KB. (PDF format)

 g. Credit/ Debit/ Net Banking etc detail 

RESERVATION:

• The schools have reservation of seats in categories mentioned below:-

  1. 70% of seats are reserved for the wards of serving and retired JCOs/OR those in the Army, Navy and Air Force.

  2. 30% of seats are reserved for the wards of Officers & Civilians.

  3. 27%,15%and7.5%of the seats in each category(excluding Officer Category)are reserved for OBC on-creamy layer, SC and ST candidates respectively.

  4. A total of 50 seats (Not more than 15 in either of the school) are earmarked for wards of personal killed in action.

CONDITIONS OF ELIGIBILITY

Education Qualification :

For admission to Class VI, no previous education qualification is mandatory. For admission in Class IX, the candidate should have passed Class VIII from a government/recognized school before the date of admission to a Rashtriya Military School. However, students studying in Class V and Class VIII are eligible to appear in the respective Entrance Test. They should also preferably know sufficient English which is the medium of instruction in Rashtriya Military Schools

Age Criteria for RMS 2025 Exam:

• For Class VI (boys & girls both ) – Candidates must be between 10 and 12 years old as of March 31, 2026. This means their date of birth should fall between April 1, 2014, and March 31, 2016 (both dates inclusive)

• For Class IX (only boys) – Candidates must be between 13 and 15 years old as of March 31, 2026. This means their date of birth should fall between April 1, 2011, and March 31, 2013 (both dates inclusive)

• Six months relaxation in upper age limit is permissible for wards of personnel Killed in Action. The Authority for Date of Birth will be a School Leaving Certificate obtained from the previous school of the candidate and countersigned by the District Education Officer. Certificates issued by Gram Panchayat or any other local body are not acceptable. Any variation in the Date of Birth or any other particulars in the sheet role and the School Leaving Certificate will render the candidature of the child null and void.

Admission Test:

The CET written examination for Class VI & Class IX will be fully Automated through Optical Mark Reader (OMR) based examination and scheme of marking for these papers will be as given on the right side :-

Syllabus :

Written test will generally be of Class V standard for Class VI admission and Class VIII standard for Class IX admission. Medium of Question Paper in Entrance exam is English or Hindi for Class VI and only English for Class IX.

Interview :

Those candidates who qualify in the written test and short-listed, will be called for the interview at one of the Rashtriya Military Schools. Marks of the interview will be added to the score of the written test before deciding the final merit. No traveling or other allowance is admissible in connection with the journeys undertaken for the Common Entrance Test or the interview.

Result :

Merit list of successful candidates and the school allotment will be declared by IHQ of MoD (Army), DGMT/MT-15. No separate intimation will be sent to the unsuccessful candidates. However, the final result will be available on www.rashtriyamilitaryschools.edu.in and on army Intranet.

Final Selection :

Candidates selected in order of merit on the basis of total marks secured by them in the admission test and the interview will be admitted to different Rashtriya Military Schools based on availability of vacancies, medical fitness and as per the reservations norms laid down for various categories. Qualified candidates will be allotted school purely on the basis of Merit and the vacancy available in school.

JOINING INSTRUCTIONS FOR WARDS SELECTED FOR ADMISSION TO CLASS - VI & IX IN RASHTRIYA MILITARY SCHOOLS CHAIL AJMER. BELGAUM BENGALURU & DHOLPUR FOR THE ACADEMIC SESSION: 2026-27.

General

Your ward has been selected for admission to Rashtriya Military School for the academic session 2026-27 and will report to the Principal of the concerned School as per instructions contained in this letter. Only parents are requested to accompany their wards on the day of admission.

Medical Fitness :

All the candidates will be required to undergo medical fitness examination before admission to the Rashtriya Military Schools as per norms/criteria as specified in AFMSF-2 and only in the hospital he has mentioned in the Application Form. The medical examination will be carried out at only one of the listed hospitals mentioned under the head "LIST OF HOSPITALS FOR CONDUCT OF MEDICAL TEST". Candidate found medically unfit by the board of officers at listed hospitals will not be admitted. The candidate will also be required to remain medically fit during the course of his stay at Rashtriya Military School. The admission of the candidate will be provisional till a Fitness certificate is received from the Hospital. 

NO CHANGE IN MEDICAL EXAM CENTRE WILL BE ALLOWED.

Following documents in original will be brought at the time of admission alongwith two Photostat copies duly attested by gazetted officer.

1.     Proof of Date of Birth from competent authority (Unit Part II Order for entitled category i.e. JCOS/OR and their equivalent in IAF/Navy including Ex Servicemen).

2.     Caste Certificate (in case of SC/ST/OBC-NCL).

3.     Proof of having passed class V or VIII.

4.     Part II Order (In case of killed in action category).

5.     Medical fitness certificate (from Military Hospital).

6.     Character Certificate from the Principal of the last School attended.

7.     Income Certificate (In case total income of parents is less than 1.5 lac per annum).

8.     Ex-serviceman status certificate (in case of parent an ex-serviceman).

9.     Transfer Certificate from last school attended.

10.   Wards of JCOS/OR & their equivalent in Air Force / Navy are requested to submit their father's present rank certificate duly signed by the CO/OC of the unit at the time of admission and also during every academic year while paying the tution fees.

Note: IN CASE OF FALSIFICATION OF DOCUMENTS THE CANDIDATURE WILL BE CANCELLED AT ANY TIME CHANGE OF CATEGORY WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES.

RMS FEES AND CAUTION MONEY (Tentative)

Tuition fee and caution money with respect to different categories is given below. SC and ST candidates are required to pay one fourth of the amount mentioned below :-

Note:

Caution money will be deposited at the time of admission and refunded without interest to the cadet on discharge from the school. The School fees are payable for a year and will be paid directly to the school at the time of admission. No fees will be charged from sons of officers and JCOs/OR and their equivalent ranks in the Navy and Air Force who have been killed in action.

FEES IN RESPECT OF WARDS OF SERVICE OFFICERS/JCOs/NCOs KILLED IN ACTION

The wards of service officers/JCOs/NCOs killed in action are entitled complete exemption from tuition fees and other fees. (Capitation fee & Caution money not included).

AWARD OF SCHOLARSHIPS

15% of the non-entitled cadets (i.e. sons of service officers and civilians) in the school are awarded means-cum-merit scholarships on the basis of a common scholarship test conducted by the Army Headquarters. The scholarships are awarded as per following rules:

(a) Full remission of the school fees in the case of those cadets whose parents income is less than Rs. 3,00,000/- in a financial year.

(b) Fees at half rates are charged from cadet whose parents income exceeds Rs. 3,00,000/- but is not more than Rs. 4,50,000 - in the financial year.

POCKET MONEY

A minimum of Rs. 10,000/- will be deposited by all categories in the Pocket Money Account of the ward to cater to the traveling expenses and monthly pocket money. It is mandatory to maintain balance of Rs. 4,000/- at any one time under this head.

RMS Daily ROUTINE

The Daily routine of the Rashtriya Military Schools have come to establish themselves as important traditions of the schools. While the day is planned so as to get the Cadets to live an active campus-life due heed is also paid to have ample scope for rest, leisure and individual time. The routine followed in Rashtriya Military Schools is as given :-

7:30 AM - 8:00 AM- Breakfast

8:30 AM - 8:50 AM- Morning Assembly

8:50 AM - 1:30 PM- Academic Classes

1:45 PM - 2:15 PM- Lunch
